OTTAWA – Canada US relations have entered a historic low as Prime Minister Mark Carney denounced President Donald Trump’s actions, calling them a betrayal of long-standing ties.
Speaking to supporters in Ottawa on Monday, Carney said Trump’s harsh tariffs and threats to annex Canada had shattered the trust built over decades. “President Trump has betrayed Canada. Our old relationship with the United States is over,” Carney declared.
Carney’s strong words came after his Liberal Party secured a fresh mandate, although they will need to collaborate with smaller parties in Parliament. He stressed that despite the hardships ahead, Canada will resist pressure and chart a new, independent path.
The worsening Canada US relations are fueled by Trump’s recent remarks confirming his idea of absorbing Canada as the 51st American state was “not a joke.” Carney warned that while the initial shock has passed, Canadians must never forget this betrayal.
Promising to lead Canada into an era of economic resilience, Carney vowed: “We will win this trade war and build the strongest economy among the G7 nations.”
Meanwhile, Trump reiterated claims that the US subsidizes Canadian military and economic security, adding more fuel to the escalating tensions.
