BEML Wins 2025 Golden Peacock Award for India’s First All-Electric Rope Shovel

New Delhi — In a landmark moment for India’s heavy engineering and mining sector, BEML Limited has been awarded the prestigious Golden Peacock Eco-Innovation Award 2025 for its BRS-21 All-Electric Rope Shovel—a machine set to redefine eco-conscious industrial practices in large-scale mining.

The accolade was conferred by the Union Minister for Heavy Industries, HD Kumaraswamy, at a high-profile awards ceremony attended by business leaders, policymakers, and innovation experts. Rajeev Kumar Gupta, BEML’s Director of Operations, accepted the honor on behalf of the organization.

As the first indigenously designed and developed all-electric rope shovel in India, the BRS-21 represents a major stride toward decarbonizing one of the country’s most energy-intensive industries. The shovel eliminates reliance on diesel engines, significantly lowering carbon emissions, boosting energy efficiency, and reducing operating costs across mining operations.

Engineered entirely in-house by BEML’s R&D team, the BRS-21 stands as a flagship achievement in India’s Make in India campaign, and aligns directly with the government’s broader Net Zero goals and emphasis on green manufacturing.

The Golden Peacock Eco-Innovation Award, established by the Institute of Directors (IOD), honors companies that demonstrate outstanding innovation in sustainable and environmentally responsible technologies. BEML’s win reinforces its growing influence in the global shift toward eco-friendly heavy machinery and infrastructure development.

This achievement places BEML at the forefront of clean industrial innovation in emerging economies, showing that domestic capabilities can meet and exceed global benchmarks in sustainability. It also reflects broader trends in the mining sector, where electrification and smart automation are fast becoming strategic priorities.

With plans underway to further scale green manufacturing—including a centralized warehousing facility in Bilaspur—BEML’s vision for environmentally sustainable engineering is steadily becoming a reality.

As nations accelerate the transition to low-emission industrial practices, India’s public sector enterprises like BEML are proving critical to balancing economic growth with ecological responsibility.
