According to new data from Sensor Tower, the most popular prompts on ChatGPT between March and April 2025 were related to software development, which accounted for 29% of all queries. This marked a sharp drop from the same period in 2024, when software-related prompts made up 44%.
The shift may reflect a broader adoption of ChatGPT by general users beyond early adopters in tech, who initially dominated usage with programming and automation tasks.
Interestingly, queries about history and society have grown in popularity, now representing 15% of total prompts—up from 13% the previous year. This shows a rising curiosity among users in understanding social context, historical events, and cultural issues.
Similarly, AI and machine learning prompts tied with history as the second most popular category, also capturing 15% of all queries. Users increasingly seek guidance on building models, understanding algorithms, and staying current with AI developments.
One of the fastest-growing categories was economics, finance, and taxation, which more than tripled in share compared to 2024. This trend suggests growing interest in investment insights, market trends, and macroeconomic forecasts, especially amid global financial uncertainties.
Other prominent categories included entertainment, education, platforms & tools, and technology trends, each reflecting how AI is assisting in a wide range of human activities—from casual learning to professional research.
The data highlights how ChatGPT has evolved from a niche tool for coders into a mainstream platform used for diverse topics by a global audience. As user behavior shifts, so too does the AI’s role in supporting everyday decision-making and curiosity.
