World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2025 Announced: Indonesia Absent, Bangkok Shines

Turin, Italy – The much-anticipated 2025 edition of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants has been officially announced, unveiling the top names shaping the global fine dining scene. Held on June 19 in Turin, the event marked the 23rd year of the prestigious ranking often dubbed the “Oscars of gastronomy.”

This year’s winner is Maido, a Nikkei cuisine powerhouse based in Lima, Peru. Under the leadership of Chef Mitsuharu “Micha” Tsumura, Maido climbed from fifth place in 2024 to the very top, thanks to its sophisticated fusion of Japanese culinary techniques with bold Peruvian ingredients. “This marks Maido’s 16th year in operation, and it’s still evolving,” Tsumura noted during the award ceremony.

Global and Regional Highlights
The 2025 list features restaurants from 32 cities across 22 countries, including 10 newcomers and 4 re-entries. The top five is dominated by Latin America and Europe, with Asador Etxebarri (Spain), Quintonil (Mexico), Diverxo (Spain), and Alchemist (Denmark) rounding out the elite circle.

Asia continues to assert its presence. Gaggan in Bangkok ranks 6th, representing modern Indian cuisine through the vision of Chef Gaggan Anand. Another Bangkok-based restaurant, Potong, made its debut at No. 13. Founded in 2021 by Chef Pichaya “Pam” Soontornyanakij in the city’s Chinatown, Potong is celebrated for its Thai-Chinese innovation and Michelin recognition.

Japan also performed well, with Sézanne (Tokyo) at No. 7 and Narisawa (Tokyo) at No. 21. Meanwhile, Singapore’s Odette maintained its global relevance, landing at No. 25.

Indonesia’s Absence, But Not Without Recognition
Despite growing international interest in Southeast Asian cuisine, no Indonesian restaurant appeared on the 2025 global list. However, Jakarta-based August, co-founded by Budi Cahyadi and Hans Christian, was previously ranked No. 49 in Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants, affirming Indonesia’s emerging culinary credibility within the region.
