Sri Mulyani Indrawati, Indonesia’s Minister of Finance and a prominent figure in the Indonesia Maju Cabinet, joined the nationwide celebration of Kartini Day on April 21st. Amidst her busy schedule attending the Spring Meetings of the IMF and World Bank, as well as the G20 Summit in Washington D.C., Sri Mulyani took a moment to reflect on a letter written by Estella Zeehandelaar, the pen pal of RA Kartini, dating back to May 25, 1899.
“Quoting a letter from Raden Ajeng Kartini to Miss Zeehandelaar on May 25, 1899, during my childhood, the concept of emancipation had yet to resonate with me. The significance of these ideas remained beyond my comprehension. However, within my heart, a fervent desire for freedom, independence, and self-sufficiency continued to grow,” she shared on her Instagram handle @smindrawati, Sunday (4/21/2024).
Draped in traditional batik attire, Sri Mulyani paid homage to the timeless wisdom of RA Kartini’s writings, which continue to inspire generations.
She emphasized that the empowerment of women and their quest for independence are noble endeavors, as women play an indispensable role in the nation’s progress. “Whether through entrepreneurship, pursuing careers, or engaging in politics and public policy, a nation that embraces the progressive ideals of its women will undoubtedly thrive,” Sri Mulyani remarked.
Affectionately known as Ani, she called upon all women to perpetuate Kartini’s enduring spirit, which remains as relevant today as it was in the past. An advocate for expanding opportunities for women in education, Sri Mulyani also champions their involvement in social, economic, and political spheres. The issue of gender equality featured prominently in discussions during her engagements in the United States capital. “The spirit of women’s emancipation, epitomized by Kartini’s legacy, will continue to guide me in all my endeavors, including international forums where gender equality is a pivotal subject,” she concluded.
